Lewandowski, Messi, Vardy: The 11 longest goalscoring streaks in league football history

Robert Lewandowski's ridiculous goalscoring streak has come to an end.

The Polish striker was in the starting lineup for Bayern's match against Greuther Furth on Friday evening.

He was hoping to score in his 16th consecutive Bundesliga game.

However, he failed to hit the back of the net for the first time in the league since February.

Bayern won 3-1, with Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich and Sebastian Griesbeck (own-goal) on target for the visitors.

So, as Lewandowski's goalscoring streak ends, where does it stand among the longest in history?

We looked at the longest goalscoring streaks in football history back in December 2019 and we've updated the list after Lewandowski's achievement.

Jamie Vardy | 11 | Premier League

Vardy went on a ridiculous goalscoring run at the start of Leicester's miraculous Premier League title triumph.

He began his streak on August 29 against Bournemouth before notching against Aston Villa, Stoke, Arsenal, Norwich, Southampton, Crystal Palace, West Brom, Watford, Newcastle and then Manchester United.

He scored 13 times during that stretch.

Gabriel Batistuta | 11 | Serie A

The Argentine scored on the opening day of the 1994/95 season and he went on to score in each of the next 10 games.

His 26 strikes that season saw him win the Golden Boot but, despite Batistuta's brilliance, Fiorentina could only muster a 10th place finish.

Jimmy Dunne | 12 | First Division

A prolific goalscorer, the Irishman scored 30 or more league goals in three consecutive seasons for Sheffield United between 1930 and 1933.

He notched in 12 consecutive appearances during the 1931/22 campaign.

Robert Lewandowski | 12 | Bundesliga

Lewandowski has gone on an incredible goalscoring streak before, scoring in 12 appearances for Dortmund during the 2012/13 campaign.

Serge Masnaghetti | 13 | French Division 1

Masnaghetti managed to score in 13 consecutive league games for Valenciennes during the 1962/63 season.

He only appeared for France twice, scoring once.

Stan Mortensen | 15 | First Division

Mortsensen scored in 15 consecutive First Division matches during the 1950/51 campaign.

His goals helped Blackpool to a third place finish.

Tor Henning Hamre | 15 | Meistriliiga

Hamre was the definition of a goalscoring machine during his one-and-half-year stint in Estonia, scoring a ridiculous 62 times in 50 games.

He scored in 15 consecutive games while playing for FC Flora in 2013.

Josef Martinez | 15 | MLS

Martinez has been prolific in MLS since joining the league.

After flopping for Torino, the Venezuelan signed for Atlanta United in 2017.

He has scored 99 times in 124 games at the time of writing, which includes scoring in 15 consecutive games in 2019.

Robert Lewandowski | 15 | Bundesliga

Lewandowski is the only player to feature on the list twice.

His streak started on February 15, 2021 against Arminia Bielefeld. He went on to score against Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Koln, Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Stuttgart, Mainz, Gladbach, Freiburg, Augsburg, Gladbach, FC Koln, Hertha Berlin, RB Leipzig and Bochum.

Teodor Peterek | 16 | Ekstraklasa

Peterak was a lethal Polish striker, making history during the 1937/38 season while at Ruch Chorzow.

Gerd Muller | 16 | Bundesliga

Lewandowski fell just shy of Muller's Bundesliga record.

Considered one of the greatest strikers to have ever lived, 'Der Bomber' notched in 16 consecutive games for Bayern during the 1969/70 season.

Lionel Messi | 21 | La Liga

Imagine scoring in 21 consecutive games?! That's exactly what Messi did for Barcelona in the 2012/13 campaign.

Starting in mid-November, Messi went on a streak where he scored a ridiculous 33 times in 21 games.

Of all the records the Argentine has, this has to be up there with the best. It's one that may never be broken.
